Foliar nutrition is one of the most misapplied tools in crop management, used either as a cure-all or dismissed as marketing. The truth sits in between: leaves absorb small quantities of nutrients quickly and efficiently, which makes foliar sprays excellent for correcting micronutrient deficiencies and nearly useless as a substitute for the crop’s bulk nitrogen and potassium supply.

How foliar feeding works: absorption through the leaf

The leaf surface is covered by a waxy cuticle whose job is to prevent water loss. Nutrient solutions cross it slowly, through fine hydrated pathways and around the stomata. Three consequences follow directly from that mechanism, and they explain nearly every foliar success and failure:

  • Uptake happens only while the droplet is still liquid. Once it dries, absorption stops. Anything that shortens drying time, heat, wind, low humidity, midday sun, reduces the dose absorbed.
  • Total quantity is limited. There is a ceiling on how much can cross the cuticle before scorch risk rises. This is why a crop’s full nitrogen requirement cannot practically be met through leaves.
  • Coverage is the dose. Fine, even droplets on both leaf surfaces deliver far more than a heavy, running spray that lands on a third of the canopy.

Highly responsive to foliar application. Frequently deficient in calcareous, high-phosphorus soils. Symptoms: short internodes, small clustered leaves, interveinal chlorosis.

Getting the application right

  1. Spray early morning or late afternoonCooler temperatures and higher humidity keep the droplet liquid longer, which directly increases the amount absorbed. Avoid midday heat entirely.

Foliar sprays do not fix a broken base programme. If nitrogen or potassium supply is inadequate, the quantities involved are far beyond what leaves can absorb. Foliar nutrition supplements a sound soil or fertigation plan, it never replaces one. Start with the base crop nutrition programme and add foliar sprays where the analysis shows a specific gap.

Diagnosing before you spray

Spraying a micronutrient the crop does not need costs money and can induce antagonism with another nutrient. A short diagnostic sequence prevents that:

Where are the symptoms? New growth points to immobile nutrients, iron, zinc, calcium, boron, manganese. Older leaves point to mobile nutrients, nitrogen, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus.

What is the pattern? Interveinal chlorosis, marginal scorch, distortion and stunting each narrow the list considerably.

Is it uniform or patchy? Uniform symptoms across a block suggest a nutritional or irrigation cause. Patchy symptoms following soil variation, drainage lines or wheel tracks usually point to a soil physical problem instead.

Confirm with tissue analysis. Sampling the correct leaf position at the correct stage turns an inference into a measurement, and gives you a baseline to compare against next season.
